Iceland Workshops
Keilir - Atlantic Center of Excellence hosted an international conference and workshop on flipped learning 14 April 2015 in Iceland. Close to 400 people attended the conference, with forty people arriving from outside Iceland. Keynote speakers at the conference were Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams, pioneers of the flipped class movement and authors of the best selling book "Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day”. The focus of the conference was on short relevant hands on workshops for teachers, trainers and school administrators, with no more than 25 participants in each of the workshops. Attendees were able to select four different workshops during the conference. The workshops were administered by teachers at Keilir as well as relevant teachers from other educational institutions on the forefront of using flipped practices in their classrooms. In total 17 workshops were held, each workshop offered at four different times in both English and Icelandic, during the conference. The workshops offered were:

The conference was followed with a half day hands-on workshop with close to 60 participants. Learn how teachers can talk to every student in every class every day creating a learner centred, inquiry driven, problem-based classes. Jon and Aaron will focus on how administrators can implement flipped learning into their schools. Learn how you can begin to transform your school by asking one critical question: What is the best use of my face-to-face class time?”

Germany - Workshops
The German partner - sofatutor - arranged quarterly hands-on workshops and teacher trainings. The workshops served both as training opportunities for teachers and information meetings about the facets and methods of flipped learning. Issues covered include the production of videos according to the copyright law, class time scenarios and use of videos in different class time situations. At the other hand the workshops served as panels for discussion and exchange of experiences between teachers. Teachers used the time period between workshops to implement the knowledge of new methods and test flipped teaching methods. All teachers and students of the partner schools received free access to educational material at the website of sofatutor.com and were able to use the videos if they didn’t want to produce their own videos. Workshops arranged include:
  • Kick-off Workshop at 20 September 2014 in Berlin with focus on Flipped Learning and Best Practices: This workshop served to deepen the understanding of flipped teaching. Alexandra Kück presented her experience with flipped teaching and shared a lot of practical examples. The second part of the workshop was used for the planning of the school year and the definition of the next steps to integrate flipped learning approaches in class time.
  • Workshop “Reflection of the last and strategy for the next project period” at 26 January 2015 in Berlin with focus on the development and exchange of ideas and practices: This workshop we used for evaluation of the last activities, we interview the teachers on their experience with flipped teaching and we presented our new project website for dissemination.
  • Workshop “sofatutor & Flipped Classroom” at 18 February 2015 in Hamburg with focus on teacher training (how to use sofatutor & Introduction to Flipped Classroom): This workshop was a training for teachers who might be joining the project of the Kurt-Körber-Gymnasium in Hamburg.
  • Workshop on “Didactics & Methods of Flipped Learning” at 13 June 2015 in Berlin with focus on exchange with guests and methods of flipped learning: The workshop started with contributions of two experienced flipped classroom teachers from South Germany (Sebastian Schmidt & Felix Fähnrich). Both are enthusiastic proponents of flipped learning and shared their experiences with the panel. After that we discussed methods/patterns to plan units and the whole learning process to identify where flipped classroom units are beneficial from a didactic perspective.
  • Workshop on 29th of February 2016 at Maria-Montessori Grundschule, Berlin with participanting teachers from 6 project schools. Focus on introduction of new teachers to flipped classroom, network building between experienced and new flipped classroom teachers, sharing experiences and sample lessons, and planning flipped classroom for the next school semester.
  • Workshop on 9th of September 2016 at Anna-Freud-Schule with participating teachers from 6 project schools. Focus on self-made videos and teacher presentation of sample flipped classroom units
